Ever wonder how Cambodia connects to the internet? well, you probably don’t really care, as long as you are able to search, browse, read, watch, surf, chat, talk, blog all those world wide web craps. Even if you care, you would only point out to the usual suspects namely Online, CityLink, TeleSurf, AngkorNet or MekongNet.

If you really want to know though, the Cambodia’s Internet Scene is actually a lot more just the above companies. To be exactly, as of August this year, there are up to 20 (twenty) internet entities in Cambodia. (by comparison, our neighbors Laos has less than ten, while Vietnam has just over twenty)

Not all of the twenty are internet service providers (ISP), but it’s still pretty impressive considering a report of only 44,000 Cambodians have internet access compared to 16 millions in Vietnam.

Interesting enough, out of the twenty, 6 of them are brand-new start-up companies registered in 2007 including one with “THE BEST VERVICE IN THERE”. Yes, it’s “VERVICE“. Don’t believe me? Here is the list of Who is who in Cambodia’s Internet scene: Cambodian Internet ASN Aug07.pdf

La’eark
What <strike>the hell</strike> does it mean?

[hint 1] it’s a verb used to tell things in a way we do not like

Whenever I speak this word, people think I’m an alien and ask “where are you from?”. Then again, maybe I am indeed an alien. No wait, I’m not exactly an alien. I’m just from Siem Reap.

And you do realize that apart from Angkor Wat and hundreds of other temples, there is one more thing that differentiate Siem Reap from the rest of Cambodia. It’s the way we speak.

You might have heard of it before or you might have never heard of it before. So I thought it might be fun to put this word up for people to guess what does it mean? If you happens to know this word, please be silent for a while. Vireak, alien or not alien. It’s you to decide.

No prize, no free dinner for this though! Unless someone generous to give me a good deal for my fridge. Then I may give you free dinner. But then if guess wrongly….how about a treat?

Belated predictions…but better late than never. Not a mistake that it’s late, but a feature! Here we go:

1. Cambodia to introduce a new law aiming to curb with increasing practices of wedding-parties-cum-thousand-dollar-businesses. The wedding business in which the organizer often invite as many as thousand known and unknown guests just to collect gifts and money presents, is become increasingly unethical and out-of-control. It’s not uncommon for an ordinary guy to receive 4 or 5 invitations in the same day. So our dear lawmakers won’t sit still. One lawmaker proposes a new law which limits the number of invitations to 500 only per wedding party. Cool!

2. The new wedding party law is so popular that it is approved by all except one young lawmaker who is absent. One the eve of the day which the law is scheduled to come in to effect, the lawmaker who proposes the idea receives 501 wedding invitations. The 1 invitation is from the young lawmaker who is absent. Still well within the law, oh well!

3. A Cambodian TV to have an idol-styled singing competition. Or is there already such program? Hmm, when was the last time I watched Khmer entertainment programs? 3, 4 years ago…oh well.

4. One of Cambodia most popular male singers releases a song whose title is translated as “Pain on the horizon“.

The song goes on to win the best foreign-language song of the year award because everyone thinks the guy sing a language that isn’t khmer.

(Anyone knows any new modern songs that can be understood in khmer at the moment? All those songs, I don’t know what the hell they’re singing. I only know that if it’s not painful, it must be hurtful. It’s as if everytime they write a lyric, someone is dying somewhere. Oh well!)

5. In an attempt to explain that he indeed sings the song “Pain on the horizon” in khmer, the male singer releases another song titled “Hurtful ‘coz of misunderstanding“.

The song is so nice that it goes on to win the award of the year for the best song that no-one understands.

6. But all is forgotten when it is announced that the best artist of the year award goes to guess-who “my brother” who releases his greatest hit single titled “sailing“:

“Sailing” sung by my brother is widely considered as the greatest thing ever happened to entertainment – be it group entertainment or mainstream one. Anyone whoever listens to my brother singing the song raw knows this. The song is available on “Sompoch Production” only.
