2007 predictions – part II !

Belated predictions…but better late than never. Not a mistake that it’s late, but a feature! Here we go:

1. Cambodia to introduce a new law aiming to curb with increasing practices of wedding-parties-cum-thousand-dollar-businesses. The wedding business in which the organizer often invite as many as thousand known and unknown guests just to collect gifts and money presents, is become increasingly unethical and out-of-control. It’s not uncommon for an ordinary guy to receive 4 or 5 invitations in the same day. So our dear lawmakers won’t sit still. One lawmaker proposes a new law which limits the number of invitations to 500 only per wedding party. Cool!

2. The new wedding party law is so popular that it is approved by all except one young lawmaker who is absent. One the eve of the day which the law is scheduled to come in to effect, the lawmaker who proposes the idea receives 501 wedding invitations. The 1 invitation is from the young lawmaker who is absent. Still well within the law, oh well!

3. A Cambodian TV to have an idol-styled singing competition. Or is there already such program? Hmm, when was the last time I watched Khmer entertainment programs? 3, 4 years ago…oh well.

4. One of Cambodia most popular male singers releases a song whose title is translated as “Pain on the horizon“.

The song goes on to win the best foreign-language song of the year award because everyone thinks the guy sing a language that isn’t khmer.

(Anyone knows any new modern songs that can be understood in khmer at the moment? All those songs, I don’t know what the hell they’re singing. I only know that if it’s not painful, it must be hurtful. It’s as if everytime they write a lyric, someone is dying somewhere. Oh well!)

5. In an attempt to explain that he indeed sings the song “Pain on the horizon” in khmer, the male singer releases another song titled “Hurtful ‘coz of misunderstanding“.

The song is so nice that it goes on to win the award of the year for the best song that no-one understands.

6. But all is forgotten when it is announced that the best artist of the year award goes to guess-who “my brother” who releases his greatest hit single titled “sailing“:

“Sailing” sung by my brother is widely considered as the greatest thing ever happened to entertainment – be it group entertainment or mainstream one. Anyone whoever listens to my brother singing the song raw knows this. The song is available on “Sompoch Production” only.

Isn’t it cool to have such a law? In my point of views, that lawmaker might want to increase productivity and to make people save.

Most of the Khmer songs now are hybrid. If the lyric doesn’t contain English, the songs would not be sold I guess. I really wonder how many Khmer people understand those songs.

Another great set of predictions from you.. They are very funny and practical. :p I believe some of them will be true..

vichea: yeah, I believe the practices must be stopped either by us collectively boycotting such practices and by such law. As for the modern songs, whether they’re in Khmer or hybrid, I still don’t know what they sing about.

mongkol: thanks! though they’re just predictions…you might see me at Wat Phnom if they’re all come true…hehe.

Hmm i dont like the new law though cuz im still single and i plan to have that thousand-dollar-wedding-party and of course I’ll invite you as well even if we never met face to face and i only posted a few reply in ur blog. All in all i wish i could be a millionaire after marriage hehehheh.

Haha… The wedding law’s the most practical one. Hope ur prediction comes true. Each wedding season, I guess a lot Cambodians put on a considerable amount of weight because of all the unhealthy wedding reception meals they eat almost everyday. Not to mention the number of traffic accidents after some of the party-goers got drunk and still drive anyway.

As for the songs, yeah sometimes they sound like they’re in a foreign language. How on earth could an artist release a different album every month? Why can’t the government be as effective as that? Compared to all the crappy songs, I’ll choose ur big bro’s signature song for sure… LOL…

Nah you dont have to come, Reak, just send along the wedding money and i mean cash! ;P

sure starfish, how much do you want? My photocopier is underused right now…

hm…nice idea but pim think this law is not consistent with our constitution article 31 which guarantee Khmer citizen right. Organizing an extravagant wedding party is fine as long as it does not alter the other people right. They just send you the invitation card, does not mean you MUST go. If you don’t go (dun gift them gift/money), those organizer is not going to kill you. If they do then here go our transitional criminal law.

if our law maker does not want people to hold such a big party for money! then they should impose TAX on the wedding income.

for the song, pim think the producer focus more on the quantity rather than quality. they dun care about what copyrights is! some of the song writer should not call themselves writer but song copier/translator. Is it too difficult to write a song???

reak said:

nah…pim’s talk about constitution, criminal law and tax make reak’s head go spinning like crazy….

true, that it does not mean we must go, but khmer people nature don’t like to reject invitation.. pim’s ideas of tax on wedding income is quiet practical though.

as for those music, … it’s probably difficult, but well…whatever coz reak doesn’t listen to them anyway
