Lost in translation in Siem Reap
Posted in Cambodia & Beyond by reak at 9:28 pm |

About 6 months ago, a TV reporter came to Banteay Srey, Siem Reap after learning that there were land grabbing activities from villagers in the district. Guess what welcomed them when they interviewed the villagers:

Anyone not understands? Banteay Srey district is home to the famous Banteay Srey temple and is also home to villagers with one of the coolest Khmer accents, the so-called Siem Reap accent. I also have Siem Reap accent, but not as strong as the Banteay Srey people. I do have some distant relatives as native villagers there though. So beware when you come to Siem Reap.

Anyway, regarding the land dispute, if I have not wrongly heard, it was resolved in favor of the villagers after the TV exposure.

What is “DENH”? What is “SDOUY” by villagers? Somewhat headache..!! Sorry for that I write wrong words in Khmer.

>Bunna: good question! Any guess?

Alright, let me guess, DENH means DEUNG= ( To know) and SDOUY means AVEY or EY 0r SA EY= (what), so this two combination will be, DENH SDOUY?= DEUNG AVEY? or DEUNG EY? or even in PP accent, DEUNG SA EY KE?=know what?

You can start by using SDOUY to sing a Preap Sovath song, ( AVEY AVEY MOK PI ON, AVEY AVAY MOK PI SNGOUN….by SDOUY SDOUY MOK PI ON, SDOUY SDOUY MOK PI SNGOUN..bla bla bla) but please do it just in Siem Reap…
