Q: What happens when a khmer dude meets a khmer dude?
A: They talk about girls.
Q: What happens when a khmer dude meets an indian dude?
A: They also talk about girls. What else!
Here is a (mocked-up-a-little-bit) conversation with my indian friend. The topic was about guess what “Marriage Tradition”.
Friend: so what is the marriage tradition like in Cambodia? Do guys approach girls or girls approach guys?
Me: The guy’s parent approach the girl’s parent to ask the girl’s hands.
Friend: Really? Then how about the dowry? Who pays?
(dowry is a gift of money or property by a man to or for his bride or vice versa)
Me: Yes! The guy pays to the girl’s parent.
Friend: Oh! How much normally?
Me: Hmmm…I think at least 5000USD.
Friend: Hahha! For us indians, it’s completely the opposite. The girl’s parent approach our parent and pays the dowry.
Me: Really? So good! How much?
Friend: Hmm…for a good looking guy with good job and high education, the guy’s value can be around 20000USD.
Me: 20000USD? Man you guys are so lucky! For Cambodians, even if we work hard and earn high qualification, in the end we still need to save alot if we want to get a wife.
Friend: So if the girl is very highly educated, the dowry will be more expensive and everyone is queuing up for her, right?
Me: Nope! If she’s very highly educated, it’s more likely that no one will want her.
